some children find hats comforting. for some reason their “naked” head feels exposed and vulnerable, so they take to wearing hats. it’s common with especially shy children. or perhaps his ears are just cold when he sleeps. or there’s to much noise in the home when he’s trying to sleep and he’s attempting to block it out?
It’s pretty quiet at night in our house.
I believe it’s about security. He’s latching onto something that makes him feel safe and secure when he feels most vulnerable (bed time, alone, in the dark, etc.). My son has different rituals and habits, depending on his mood, his age, the season, what’s happening in his life. I don’t interfere.
He has real hats he can wear to sleep so I don’t know why he insists on wearing the bear dress. When I asked him, he said he likes it. I think it’s cute, but kinda odd too.
That’s so cute!!! You can torment him with this when he’s an embarrassed teenage LOL
I think it’s warm and soothing to sleep with my head covered, probably why he does it, however it goes for me it goes back to when I lived in Africa at about his age and used to listen to my folks tell stories about local head hunters, since then I still like sleeping with my head and neck protected and covers up around my ears. Have you asked why he is so fond of it. Looks a little like power ranger colours. Maybe it gives him magic powers to fight bad guys in his sleep/dreams :)
I’m the opposite. I hate wearing hats. I can’t even wear socks when I sleep because the socks make me feel uncomfortable.
I think he must have a cold head!
Hopefully he won’t still be wearing the hat this summer. Otherwise his head will get all sweaty.
At least he’s in bed right. I captured one of my son last week with his head off the bed and his leg crossed over the other one – couldn’t imagine how that could be comfortable!
Hugs,
Holly
Why do kids move all over their bed when they are sleeping? Every time I check on the kids at night, they are in a different spot on the bed.
Funny, but cute.
When Alex was about 8 he wore a toboggan to bed so his hair wouldnt stick up the next morning. He called it his “bed hat.” He wore it for about 6 weeks then forgot about it.
It’s been two months and he’s still wearing the the teddy bear dress like a hat. I hope his future wife is cool with that.
