My four kids: Baby, Naddy, Eee-Eee, and Shaq

The little one is two and half years old, but his vocabulary is more like an 18-month old toddler. He understands fairly well, but he can only say a handful of words. He still can’t say his own name, or the names of his brother and sisters. That’s why he calls himself baby. And he calls his siblings Shaq, Naddy and Eee-Eee. Those are not their names. He communicates mainly by grunting and pointing. He’s like a little caveman. The doctor recommends a speech therapist, but we’re hoping he’ll catch on soon. Anyone out there with a late bloomer?

No, I don’t (my son has always been extremely verbal – gee, imagine that!), but you’ve given me a bit of a speech impediment by photographing your son in a D-Backs shirt. Really? D-Backs? I didn’t think anyone outside of the borders of AZ even knew of the D-Backs. ;)

Your kids are beautiful! Mine were verbal but one needed speech in kindergarten for language comp. Early intervention is a good thing, no?

We have three kids and our youngest daughter which is now 3 1/2 yrs. old was the same way like your son. She was pointing at things she wanted to get and we understood what she wanted. Her brother and sister did everything she wanted. She was like a little queen. And I guess it´s the same for your son. Now that our daughter started a few weeks ago with Kindergarten her speaking skills have improved so much. We understand everything she says. So don´t worry, it´ll come. I´m sure your son will also learn more words when he will be arround other kids then his siblings.
    Have a great WW!

I have a little nephew he’s in speech therapy right now. He’s 2.5. It’s amazing to see the improvement in him in just the past couple of months as he starts mastering 2 syllable words. :)

    Cute bunch!

My daughters started after two and half and it was full sentences.
    Don’t worry.
    Great pic.

SO cute! All three of my children were in speech therapy as was a cousin of mine. I remember he couldn’t say my name. My kids all had trouble with l’s (and one still does at times – like immediately after childbirth :) One has a stammer and had speech therapy from kindergarten through high school. speech therapy really gave him some coping skills. My kids tended to invent some of their own language as I can remember doing with my sister until I was about 4. My daughter used to show Baby Einstein sign language videos to my same age as your “baby” granddaughter, from about 4 months on, she still uses signs when words fail. Your little one has had such a difficult time already that this may just be another area he has to catch up in, or he could be a genius like Einstein who didn’t talk until he was four. He certainly appears to be a thoughtful little guy!

my 7 year old son sometimes say words or sentence that both me and my hubby don’t understand. when we ask something, he answered something else. seems he is not focusing. he’s a late bloomer too.. but once he entered kindergarten, he is ok a bit. i am thinking about sending him for speech therapist.. but hubby say wait first..hmm

Isn’t your youngest son the one who doesn’t like his picture taken? So he seems to be getting over that. I’m sure his speech will also catch up soon. In my experience, the ones who are a bit slow to speak sometimes come out with enormous words when they start. Suddenly they’ll spit out “bulldozer” or “ballerina,” to the astonishment of all.

Get him help if it is recommended mate.
My only other thing to say is, maybe he is not talking much as the other kids do it for him? And if you can be understood without having to form the words, why bother? You never know, he may just not be bothered! Or he may indeed need some help.
